When Austria was annexed to Nazi Germany in 1938, at the start of World War II, they started producing weapons again. It was able to continue with the help of a Swiss company. Weapons production was moved to neutral Switzerland. The name of the company was changed in 1926 to Steyr-Werke. The company shifted to the manufacture of Steyr automobiles and bicycles. As a result, they faced bankruptcy and needed to find other products to manufacture. This led to the production of the Mannlicher M1901 and the Steyr-Hahn M1912 pistols.Īfter the end of World War I, the company was no longer allowed to produce weapons. Werndl developed a rifle for the Austro-Hungarian Army while working with Ferdinand Mannlicher. Werndl's company became known as Österreichische Waffenfabriksgesellschaft (Austrian Arms-Manufacturing Company) in 1869.
