Urinary catalytic iron was measured using the bleomycin-detectable iron assay. Participants (100 obese without diabetes BMI 30 and 100 non-obese- BMI 27) were selected as a stratified random sample from an ongoing cross sectional study of obesity in subjects between the ages of 18 and 70 from an outpatient clinic and community setting. Furthermore, iron has implications in the pathogenesis of many of these complications of obesity. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether urinary catalytic iron is increased in obese subjects without DM and overt kidney disease. Catalytic iron, a biomarker of oxidative stress, can participate in redox cycling which facilitates generation of powerful oxidant species. Several studies suggest a link between obesity and CKD.
